Plank Tops List of First Time RCS Winners

07082013

Menomonie WI, July 5 – Luke Plank won his first ever Super Stock feature race Friday night at the Red Cedar Speedway to top a list of eight first time winners at the track. On a night when five makeup feature races were held along with the regular seven class program, other first time winners this season at Red Cedar included Ron Hanestad, Jesse Redetzke, Mike Anderson, Scott Gilberts, Nick Koehler, Cory Williams and Adam Hensel. Other winners on the evening included Sam Fankhauser, George Richards and Eric Schultz who scored the only double wins on the night.

Schultz won both the Hornet feature races. He led flag to flag in the makeup feature after starting in the front row of that race. The regularly scheduled feature proved to be much tougher to win after he had to battle his way up from the fourth row. The leaders ran four wide into the first turn before Schultz used the bottom side of the track to move into the lead and pull away in the late going in the nonstop race.

Richards won the Pure Stock feature, his second win of the season at Red Cedar. The feature race was a hard fought with Jake Hanson leading until he spun out, at which time Dustin Doughty took over the top spot. Doughty survived being spun out himself while leading and was restored to the point. The last few laps of the race saw a great three car battle between Doughty, Richards and Jeremy Dahl. Richards edged ahead on the final lap and when Doughty went for broke to try and regain the top spot, he spun and lost a couple of positions as Dahl moved back into second.

Hanestad started on the pole for the Makeup Street Stock feature and he ran away for the win, with only Cody Kummer able to keep Hanestad within range. Hanestad also quickly raced past Ashley Wahlstrom to take the lead in the regularly scheduled feature but then Fankhauser came from the fourth row in a stirring drive to take the lead and the win. Fankhauser was able to use the upper side of the track to drive past Hanestad and become the first four time winner at the track in 2013.

Koehler raced past Jake Smith to take the lead in the Midwest Modified feature and once in front, he rode the rest of the way for the win. Brothers Shane and Kerry Halopka closed on Koehler at the end but ran out of time before being able to mount a serious challenge.

Redetzke started on the pole for the Super Stock makeup feature and he led all the way for the win. Ben Hillman tried to run the cushion and challenge, but Redetzke maintained his solid lead for the win. The regularly scheduled main event saw Plank take the early lead, hold on through five yellow flags and not waved as he earned his first ever win in the Super Stock class. Tom Karis chased him home but couldn’t catch the Eau Claire driver.

Anderson put on a strong run as he came from the third row to win the makeup Modified main event. Anderson was able to run anywhere on the track he needed to as he threaded his way through the pack and went on for the win. Williams was just as dominant as he led the regularly scheduled Modified feature from start to finish. After a lap four yellow for a collision, Williams then pulled away from the field to win by a comfortable margin. Ashley Anderson fought off Jay Richardson to finish second.

Gilberts led all the way in the Makeup Late Model feature. He pulled out to a good sized lead in the nonstop main event until Mike Prochnow started to whittle into his lead. On the last lap Gilberts got dangerously high in turn two and Prochnow nearly got past, but Gilberts regained his line just in time to hold on for the win. The regularly scheduled Late Model main saw Hensel lead from start to finish with no one able to stay with the Baldwin driver. He pulled away to a comfortable lead early and then cruised the rest of the way.

Next Friday, July 12th, the AMSOIL Race of Champions qualifying events will be held at the speedway. The feature winner in each WISSOTA sanctioned class will be the Red Cedar representative at the Race of Champions event to be held during the WISSOTA 100 at the Dakota State Fair Speedway in Huron South Dakota in September. This program will be sponsored by WXCE-WLMX, Dirt Track Specialties, and Baxter Speed Shop. Race time is 7 p.m.
