Menomonie WI, June 14 – On a night when thunderstorms were rumbling all around the Red Cedar Speedway and lightning was flashing in all directions, there was plenty going on at the racetrack itself. Two drivers became repeat winners on the season including the first three time winner of 2013, two more winners became multi time winners at the track, and there were two first time winners including a rookie who came back after being turned around in the feature race to win his first ever feature at Red Cedar.
The first three time winner of 2013 was Sam Fankhauser as he won another Street Stock main event. His win was not an easy one even though the Street Stock field was a bit on the small side Friday. Mike Knudtson took the lead from the pole and hung tough for several laps. Ron Hanestad and Adam Soltis were side by side behind Knudtson, looking for a path past him. Meanwhile, Fankhauser started in the third row and gradually moved into contention. When he found the inside line blocked, Sam jumped up a lane where very other drivers were running and gradually made his drive to the front.
Gaining a little each lap, he was able to gradually drive past Soltis for second and then close on Knudtson. Using the same strategy, Sam eased past Knudtson to take over the lead with Soltis following suit a few laps later. Sam built up a few car lengths on the field but in the late going Soltis started to close back up using the low side, but Fankhauser held on by a couple car lengths to take the win. Knudtson got hung up in traffic late in the race with Hanestad taking third from him while Troy Fransway completed the top five.
The other repeat winner was Modified driver Kevin Adams. He started in the third row and watched an early battle between Matt Leer and Brent Prochnow that got physical early. Leer had started on the pole but Prochnow soon moved in to challenge him. They both dove low in turn three and got together with Leer spinning and Prochnow actually driving right up over Leer’s car. Remarkably, both cars were able to drive away with Leer restored to the lead.
However, on the green, Leer was soon challenged by both Adams, who dove by him on the low side and Curt Myers who passed high. Those two then went side by side before Adams was able to slide into the lead. Shortly after, Myers suffered mechanical problems and dropped out with Mark Hessler then taking the second spot.
Adams had built up a half straightaway lead which Hessler tried to cut down while at the same time trying to hold off Mike Anderson. At the halfway point, Hessler and Anderson swapped lines on the track but the margin between them stayed about the same. Adams continued motoring on unchallenged as he drove home for the win with Hessler finishing ahead of Anderson. Paul Brust, in his first appearance of 2013 had a solid fourth place finish with Cory Williams fighting off Prochnow for fifth.
Aaron Wilson earned his second Super Stock win of the year at Red Cedar when he tracked down Mike Keller with only two laps to go to take the lead. Keller had started in the third row but had found his way to the front quickly and with some nifty moves on the inside lane, grabbed the top spot. While the field battled behind him, Keller took off and gained over a half straightaway lead on the pack. Steve Thomas challenged early and Ben Hillman made an exciting charge on the outside from the back row, but eventually Wilson worked his way into second.
However, Keller appeared to be comfortably in front and without a yellow to benefit Wilson, Keller’s lead seemed comfortable. However, Keller was dealing with some rear end suspension issues that were slowing him down badly and along with some hard driving by Wilson, Aaron closed the lead rapidly. With only two laps to go, Wilson caught Keller, dove under him going into turn one and came out the leader. He expanded his margin on the final lap to take the win while Keller limped home second. Jason Forehand came from the fifth row to third with Curt Myers and Eric Olson next in line.
Brent Voeltz earned his second Hornet win of the year in a race that barely beat the rain. With rain imminent, the Hornets took off for their main event that saw a good three car battle between Voeltz, Eric Schultz and Jeremy Johnson. Voeltz and Schultz exchanged the lead several times, sandwiched in between a couple of yellow flags for spins. Following the second yellow, Voeltz was able to secure the lead with Schultz close behind. As the field was on their last lap, the rains started in earnest and the race was yellow flagged, scored complete on the white flag lap and called complete. Voeltz earned the win with Schultz, Johnson, Jess Seim and Dan Prissel finishing in the top five.
Josh Smith took his first win of the year in the Midwest Modified feature that saw the first “big one” of the year at the speedway. Justin Supri held the pole and led the first lap but as he was being passed by Jake Smith, the yellow flew and called back the lead change.
The restart saw a packed field racing close together. As they came off turn four, Jake Smith got wide and then slid back across the track as he was battling for the lead. He made hard contact with Jake Smeltzer, slowed and then angled back across the track toward the outside wall. The field was storming down on him and cars started colliding with each other at high speed. Travis Anderson was crashed into from behind, his car hit the inside marker tires for corner one, the car was launched into the air and crashed down upside down to the track. At the same time Mike Schnider and Kyle Steffen piled into Jake Smith in another grinding crash. While Anderson was shaken, he climbed out of the car under his own power with six cars being eliminated in the grinding wreck.
Supri took the lead again but he was battling with Grant Southworth and then got together in turn one. Again the yellow waved, Supri got the lead back and Southworth left with a flat tire.
The fourth attempt at racing saw the rest of the race go nonstop. Supri continued to lead until he was challenged by Josh Smith, who made the pass and then pulled away from the field. While Smith pulled comfortably away, there was some good racing behind him. The brothers Halopka were locked in a big battle for second that wasn’t decided until the final lap when Shane took the spot from Kerry. Mike Truscott raced into fourth and Supri held on for fifth.
The other first time winner was Pure Stock rookie driver Hunter VanGilder, who path to victory was a rocky one. Taking the lead from the pole, he soon was challenged by Dustin Doughty for the spot. Doughty looked to his inside on several occasions but Hunter was able to fend him off. Doughty made another hard charge for the top spot but the leaders tangled in turn two and VanGilder spun into the infield. Doughty was ruled to be the instigator and he went to the tail of the pack for the restart.
VanGilder wasn’t out of the woods yet, as he had Jeremy Dahl challenging him on the restart. However, Hunter put together several strong laps in a row and was able to stretch his margin in front. Dahl wasn’t able to muster a challenge in the remaining laps and Hunter, in only his second appearance ever at the track, took the win. Jesse Bryan finished a solid third with Doughty racing his way back into fourth ahead of Randy Burton.
Next Friday night, June 21 is Kid’s Club night at the track. Kids should arrive at the track by 6 p.m. to join in all the activities for this night in a program sponsored by 24/7 Telcom and Conrad’s Auto Salvage. The Late Models will return to the program next Friday also. On June 22nd, the speedway’s first enduro of the season will be held and on June 28th, one of the biggest Late Model events of the year will be on tap as the Blaine Brothers WISSOTA Challenge Series comes to the Red Cedar Speedway.
